What Ross Township covers

Ross Township was set up in 1848 and named for William Ross, a pioneer settler. Today it holds the town of Merrillville and parts of the city of Hobart. Merrillville is centered on the crossing of US 30 and Interstate 65, and for anyone driving the township, that crossing is the middle of it.

The Hobart part needs a word of explanation, because it confuses GPS apps and people alike. The area around Southlake Mall, near US 30 and I-65, was unincorporated Ross Township until Hobart annexed it in 1993. It’s inside Hobart now, but it’s still served by the Merrillville post office, and most businesses there list Merrillville addresses. So a Ross Township address can honestly read “Merrillville” while the city on the tax bill is Hobart.

Our Indiana area covers all of Ross Township and stops at its edges. Merrillville borders Winfield and Crown Point to the south and Porter County to the east; none of those are in our area. Pickup notes for Ross Township

Say which lot. If the car is in an apartment lot, an office lot or one of the parking areas along US 30, give the building or business name and roughly where in the lot it sits.

Not on the shoulder. US 30 and I-65 are busy roads. We load from a driveway, a parking lot or a side street, never from a highway shoulder.

At a shop or dealer? If the car is sitting at a repair shop on the US 30 strip because the estimate came back too high, read selling a car that’s stuck at a repair shop first. It covers what to sort out with the shop before we arrive.

Use the address on your mail. Merrillville or Hobart, whichever your mail says. The driver needs the street and number more than the town name.

Landmarks drivers know

The Lake County Public Library’s Central Library on West 81st Avenue. Merrillville High School and Andrean High School, both in the township. Southlake Mall near US 30 and I-65. If the car is near one of them, say so in the address field.
