What North Township covers
North Township is one of the 11 townships in Lake County. It holds three cities, Hammond, East Chicago and Whiting, and three towns, Munster, Highland and Griffith. Its west edge is the Illinois state line; Hammond is the only Indiana city that borders Chicago, and Munster looks across the line at Lansing and Lynwood.
The shape has changed more than once. North Township was one of the county’s original townships in 1837 and once ran across the whole top of the county. Hobart Township split off in 1849 and Calumet Township in 1883. The newest change is Griffith: after a long fight over township taxes, Griffith moved out of Calumet Township and into North Township on January 1, 2022.
So if you remember Griffith as “Calumet Township,” you’re not wrong. You’re just a few years out of date. For selling a junk car it makes no difference at all; we pick up in Griffith either way.
Roads the tow truck uses
North Township is crossed by two expressways and a handful of long north-south avenues. Give your nearest one when you fill in the pickup address and the driver will find you faster.
| Road | Where it runs |
|---|---|
| Indiana Toll Road (I-90) | Across Hammond, with exits at Indianapolis Boulevard, Calumet Avenue and Cline Avenue |
| Borman Expressway (I-80/94) | Just north of Munster and Highland, with exits at Calumet Avenue, Indianapolis Boulevard, Kennedy Avenue and Cline Avenue |
| Indianapolis Boulevard (US 41) | The main north-south road through Highland |
| Calumet Avenue | North-south through Munster; it becomes US 41 just north of the Borman |
| Cline Avenue (State Road 912) | A freeway linking East Chicago to the Toll Road and the Borman; south of the Borman it’s a four-lane road serving Griffith |
| Ridge Road | Follows the old Lake Michigan shoreline ridge through Munster and Highland |
| Broad Street | Griffith’s main north-south street, once State Road 73 |
Pickup notes for North Township
Near the state line. A car parked a block from the line can have an Illinois address. Put the full address in the form, city included, so we know which side we’re driving to and which state’s title you’ll be signing.
Low ground by the Little Calumet River. The river forms Munster’s north edge, Highland sits along it too, and both towns have flooded; in September 2008 a levee near Calumet Avenue and River Drive in Munster broke after Hurricane Ike. If your car sat in water, say so. We still make an offer on it.
The industrial lakefront. Much of the shore in Whiting and East Chicago is refinery, steel mill and harbor land: the Whiting Refinery, the largest oil refinery in the Midwest, and the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. We collect from a street, a driveway or a lot. We can’t drive into a plant to get a car that’s parked behind a gate.
Name a cross street. “Off Kennedy Avenue, two blocks south of the Borman” beats a house number the GPS doesn’t know.
Landmarks drivers know
Wolf Lake and its parkland, and the Horseshoe Hammond casino, in Hammond. Whiting Park and Whihala Beach on the lake. The Marktown Historic District in East Chicago. Wicker Memorial Park on Indianapolis Boulevard in Highland, which the North Township trustee owns and runs. The Hoosier Prairie State Nature Preserve, which reaches into Highland and Griffith. If one of these is close to where the car sits, mention it.
Selling a junk car here
The steps are the same in every town in the township. Fill in the two-step form with the year, make, model and title status, then your name, phone and the pickup address. We ring you back with an offer. Agree to it and the truck gets booked; often that can be the same day. There’s no charge for the tow, and you’re paid at pickup as the car leaves. How selling works has the detail.
Across the Gary city line, Calumet Township picks up where North Township stops. The paperwork is the same in every Indiana town; signing over an Indiana title walks through the back of the title line by line. For everywhere else we cover, see the rest of our Northwest Indiana area.

North Township: questions
- Is Griffith in North Township or Calumet Township?
- North Township, since January 1, 2022. Griffith voted to leave Calumet Township and moved to North Township after a long dispute; a southeast part of the town sits in St. John Township. We buy junk cars anywhere in Griffith.
- Can you pick up a car on the Illinois side of the state line?
- Yes. The business also buys cars across the Chicago area, including the Cook County suburbs that sit across the line from Hammond and Munster. Put the full address in the form. If the car has an Illinois title, that Illinois title is what you sign over.
- What do I need ready when the truck comes?
- The title, signed by every owner named on it. No title? Indiana then needs a duplicate title or a BMV certificate of authority for the sale, so tell us what papers you have and we'll work out the route on the call. Take the license plate off before the car leaves; the plate guide explains why.
