What Hobart Township covers

Hobart Township is the smallest of the four townships we cover, at about 26 square miles. It was formed in 1849 from the part of North Township south of the Little Calumet River. Today it holds most of the city of Hobart, nearly all of Lake Station, the town of New Chicago, a small portion of Gary, and a little unincorporated area called Viking Village. Liverpool is in here too.

It also used to hold Miller Beach. In 1922, after a long argument over road money, the county moved Miller Beach into Calumet Township. Miller Beach is part of Gary today.

Lake Station has its own naming story. From 1908 to 1977 it was called East Gary; the city went back to its old name, Lake Station, in 1977.

That last row matters more than it looks. Hobart and Lake Station are cut by railroad tracks, and a street that looks straight on a map can end at a crossing.

Pickup notes for Hobart Township

Name your side of the tracks. Give a cross street or a landmark on the same side of the rail line as the car. It saves the driver a loop.

Near the water. Lake George in Hobart was made by a dam on Deep River, and Deep River also runs through Lake Station. If the car is parked on grass or soft ground near the water, say so in the address field.

Split towns are fine. Hobart is split between this township and Ross Township, and Lake Station and Gary both cross township lines. None of that changes anything for you. We pick up on both sides.

Landmarks drivers know

Lake George, Lakefront Park and Festival Park in Hobart, and the old Pennsylvania Railroad Station, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. In Lake Station: Riverview Park, where the Fuzz Follies car show has run every year since 1984, the Deep River Outdoor Recreation Center, and the Fairview Walkway rail trail. The Lake Station and New Chicago library branch is on Central Avenue.
