What Calumet Township covers
Calumet Township was formed in 1883 from a six-mile-wide strip of North Township. Today it has one incorporated community, Gary, and it covers almost all of the city. A small portion of Lake Station also falls inside it. The rest is roughly five square miles of unincorporated land southwest of Gary, where the small community of Ross still sits outside any city.
The township has lost and gained land over the years. Miller Beach came over from Hobart Township in 1922. A large part of Griffith used to sit in the township too; it left for North Township on January 1, 2022. What’s left is a township that is, for practical purposes, Gary.
(One thing that trips people up on the phone: Calumet Township is not Calumet City. Calumet City is across the state line in Illinois.)
Roads in and out
| Road | What to know |
|---|---|
| Broadway (State Road 53) | The main north-south street through downtown Gary; it continues south into Merrillville |
| Borman Expressway (I-80/94) | Crosses the township east to west, with an interchange at Broadway |
| Indiana Toll Road (I-90) | Runs between downtown Gary and the U.S. Steel plant |
| Cline Avenue (State Road 912) | Serves the lakefront mills and the Gary/Chicago International Airport; its north-south stretch between US 20 and the Borman follows the Gary and Hammond city line |
| US 20 and US 12 | US 20 is Fifth Avenue on the west side; US 12 follows part of the old Dunes Highway east out of the city |
Cline Avenue’s elevated bridge was closed from December 2009 to December 2020 and rebuilt as a toll crossing. If you remember the long detours, that’s why. It’s open again.
Pickup notes for Calumet Township
The mill side of the city. U.S. Steel’s Gary Works, the largest steel mill complex in North America, fills much of the lakefront. We collect cars from streets, driveways and lots. A car inside a plant gate or a fenced industrial yard needs someone with access to bring it out first.
The Hammond edge. 165th Street, one of the roads that used to connect Hammond and Gary, has been walled off on the Gary side since 1981. If you’re near the western city line, give your nearest cross street so the driver doesn’t plan a route through a dead end.
Unincorporated addresses. Southwest of the city, outside Gary’s limits, give the street name and the nearest crossroad. A landmark helps too.
Don’t worry about the neighborhood name. Gary is a big city with many neighborhoods. A street address and a cross street are all the driver needs.
Landmarks drivers know
Gary Works along the lake. The Gary/Chicago International Airport. Indiana University Northwest. The Gary Metro Center, which is both the downtown South Shore Line station and an intercity bus stop. The ballpark of the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Mention any of these if the car is close by.

Calumet Township: questions
- Is Calumet Township the same as Calumet City?
- No. Calumet City is in Illinois. Calumet Township is in Lake County, Indiana, and today it is almost entirely the city of Gary plus some unincorporated land southwest of it.
- Is all of Gary in Calumet Township?
- Nearly all of it. A small part of Gary lies in Hobart Township. We buy junk cars in every part of the city either way.
- Can I sell a junk car here without a title?
- Yes, with the right paper. In Indiana a junk car changes hands on one of two papers. One is the title; if yours is lost, the BMV issues a duplicate for $15. The other is a BMV certificate of authority, which costs $4 and is applied for with proof the car belongs to you, your current registration for example. If the car is less than 15 model years old, Indiana law requires one of the two. Let us know which papers you do have, whether that's a bill of sale, a registration or an insurance card, and on the call we'll work out which route suits your car. How to junk a car in Indiana covers the paperwork.
